Dusty

Privacy Policy

Dusty requires no account, contains no ads or trackers, and your projects stay on your device.

In short

Who is responsible?

Dusty (apps for Mac, iPad, iPhone, Windows and Linux, and Dusty Studio in the browser) and the dusty.websolutis.com website are published by Web Solutis, the data controller for what is described here. For any question about your data: contact@websolutis.com.

Your projects and files

Dusty computes everything on your device: drawing, toolpaths, simulation and G-code. The files you open or save (.dusty projects, G-code, SVG, DXF…) stay where you choose to keep them. Settings, your list of machines, your tool libraries, the job log and the backups of your controller settings are kept in the app's data folder (or, for Dusty Studio, in your browser's storage). None of this is sent to us.

The machine

Dusty connects to your CNC router through its USB port or over your local network (Wi-Fi, Ethernet), directly, without going through our servers. On Mac, iPad and iPhone, the system asks for permission to access the local network: it is only used to reach your machine. The built-in virtual CNC runs entirely on your device.

Anonymous usage statistics

To learn which features are used and which ones cause trouble, Dusty sends anonymous events in batches to our own statistics server (telemetry.websolutis.com, Aptabase software that we host ourselves):

EventWhat is sent
App launchedunit of measure, theme
File exportedformat (G-code, SVG, PDF, DXF)
Machine connected or disconnectedcontroller family (GRBL…), link type (USB, network, virtual CNC); closed or lost
Job started or finishedcontroller family, link type; finished or interrupted
Machine alarmalarm number

Each event also carries the date, the Dusty version, the system name and version, the device language and a random session number, renewed after an hour of inactivity (and at least every twelve hours): it cannot be used to recognize you from one session to the next.

Never sent: file names or contents, drawings, project settings, machine name, port or network address, device name or serial number, any personal identifier. No cookies. The IP address of the connection is not stored with the statistics. A batch that could not be sent (no network) waits on the device, 500 events at most.

To turn them off: on Mac, iPad and iPhone, Settings › Usage Statistics; on Windows, Linux and in Dusty Studio, uncheck Help › Anonymous Usage Statistics. Development builds send nothing.

These statistics are only used to improve Dusty. They are kept for 24 months at most.

Your feedback by email

“Send Feedback…” (Help menu) opens your email app with a prefilled message addressed to contact@websolutis.com: the Dusty version, the system, the device model (Mac, iPad and iPhone), the language, and the name of the active machine with its controller. You see everything before sending, and nothing leaves unless you send it yourself.

When you write to us, we receive your email address and your message. They are only used to answer you and follow up on your request, are only read by the Dusty team, and are kept for that follow-up, at most three years after our last exchange; you can ask for them to be deleted at any time.

Updates

On Mac, iPad and iPhone, Apple's App Store announces and installs new versions: the app does not look for them itself. On Windows and Linux, the app reads the latest version file on this website (dusty.websolutis.com/maj/) at launch, at most once a day; a checkbox in Help › Check for Updates… turns this off. The Microsoft Store version is updated by the Store. Nothing installs without you.

Stores and links

This website

This website sets no cookies, does not measure its audience and loads nothing from other servers. Like any web server, ours keeps technical logs (IP address, requested page, date), used for security and to keep the site running, and kept for one year at most.

Children

Dusty is not specifically aimed at children and collects no personal data about its users, whatever their age.

Your rights

You can access your data, have it corrected or deleted, object to its processing, or ask for its restriction or portability, by writing to contact@websolutis.com. Anonymous statistics are not linked to anyone: we cannot find those of a given device, but you can turn them off at any time. You can also lodge a complaint with the French data protection authority, the CNIL (cnil.fr).

If this policy changes, the new version is published on this page, with its date.
